CT results and the oncologist

February 2, 2018 · from Lesley’s original CaringBridge journal

I had a CT scan on January 18 to determine if the cancer had spread elsewhere (a PET was scheduled but had to be cancelled bc of insurance – gotta love stupid insurance and how much they run the show). A message from my surgeon came on the 19th saying that it had NOT spread and there was no evidence of disease past the lymph node they biopsied. PRAISE THE LORD! She asked me if I had a preference of oncologists and I said I knew of no one but to send me to who she felt was best. She said she was sending me to Dr. Wells and thought he would be a good fit.

January 23 I called to see if the appointment had been made for oncology and they said “yes, it’s today” so we scrambled, a good friend was able to drop everything and come watch the boys and off Marsh and I ran back up I-20 to Augusta. When I walked in the waiting room I had an internal meltdown – I felt so out of place. I did not belong here. We were taken back to the room to wait on the doctor. He came in and our visit began. We had a lot in common – age, kids, small town GA etc. We felt comfortable with him right off. He spent at least two hours in the room with us explaining everything that was going on and the plan, never once seeming like he was in a hurry to be done. On into our meeting he asked what we did socially and church came up. Come to find out he went to a sister church in our denomination. Then we played the “do you know so-and-so” game for a while. I can’t even remember what conversation preceded the next part but he stopped and said “do you remember in John where the disciples asked Jesus whose sin caused the blind man’s blindness? Jesus said it was no one’s – the man was blind so that God’s glory could be seen. I don’t know why you have cancer, it isn’t your fault or anything you did. I don’t know how but God is going to be glorified through this.” We had the rest of our meeting. He prayed with us. He told us that he has seen the Lord do amazing things and that we were all going to continue to pray and trust and hope to that end. He told me that I am in a curative window and that is our goal. The plan is to do chemo first, then surgery, then radiation.

We were the last ones to leave the office. On the way home Marsh and I talked about how at peace we were with our doctors and the plan. The Lord is orchestrating all the details and it is comforting seeing His hand in the small things as well as the big.

So on we march. If I have to have this stupid cancer, there are at least several things in my favor. We are going to pray that I am cured and look for how God is to be glorified through all of this.

So shocked to learn all this, Lesley. I am praying with you all for complete healing and for God to be glorified in and through all this ordeal. I am thankful that God lovingly provided this doctor at your Jan 23 appt who prayed with and for you and encouraged you and Marsh with his words. God is faithful. He goes before you and is with you. You are His beloved daughter, a Daughter of the King. Praying for you complete healing, Lesley! You are loved!
